Grounded... err... Deiced by equipment problems

No equipment failure, luckily, but I did notice that the skate holder on the left boot of my Bauer Supreme 5000 ice skates were cracked when I inspected them before I was going to the ice rink with my girlfriend last weekend.

So, what am I going to do? Replace the skates? Heck no! The now discontinued Bauer Supreme 5000 ice skates has a well-earned reputation for taking a while to break in, and I remember those days. But these are my first ice hockey skates. I've ice skated recreationally in them, refereed ice hockey games in them, and punished them playing ice hockey in them for the past 10 years. And after that rocky break in time, these skates are incredibly comfortable for me. And after 10 years, that hasn't changed one bit!

As you can see in the pics, these skates are very well used. The Bauer emblem on the back of the skates had dry-rotted and fell off during a game a couple years ago, but that was just a cosmetic issue. The skate holder cracking is the first real problem I had with these skates in ten years. I think I paid around $400 for them, and they were worth every penny of that.

So, to be able to get them back on the ice, I went to the local hockey shop (They are the retail front to Hockeyx.com) to see if they could replace the skate holders. Unfortunately, they didn't have Bauer as an available vendor, so they are unable to directly help me. They did suggest to go online to get them (One place they recommended, grudgingly, was HockeyGiant.com) and bring it and my skates back to the store and they offered to install it for me.

So, I'll take them up on it (and pay them whatever it'll take). The new blade/skate holder will contrast with the beaten look of the boot, but time will fix that. And I'll look forward to another 10 years of use out of the skate! I'm sure my body will crack playing hockey before my skates will. Then again, I did think that 10 years ago...

Skating

I haven't been skating for ages! I hope I still fit my old skates. They say some smaller waters may freeze the coming weeks...
