Hockey and Fighting

Supposedly, there was some buzz recently about whether the NHL should tolerate fighting, though I haven't been reading around about it. It seems this fight between Fedoruk and Orr in a recent Flyers vs Rangers game sparked it:

This is a case of two willing participants going at it with a unfortunate result for Fedoruk.

Truthfully, as for the "should professional hockey even tolerate fighting" subject, I have mixed feelings about it. I'll be frank: I do enjoy the brutal nature of hockey. I love hockey because it's one of the few sports that combines, at its basic nature, a high amount of skill, high speeds, tactical and strategic thinking by the players, team play, and full body contact in the same game. Trying to take away the physical side of hockey would take away a core part of the reasons I watched and played hockey.

Compiz/Beryl Merge?

Looks like Beryl developers are talking about merging with Compiz. Beryl originally forked from Compiz because several developers were dissatisfied with the amount of patches that were being rejected and the conservative route Compiz was taking. Hopefully, this possible merge is a sign of good things to come, and that the advances that Beryl has made can be merged with the stability that Compiz has aimed for.

ZyXEL ZyAIR G-102 works in Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft!

Earlier, I had mentioned that I was getting the ZyXEL ZyAIR G-102v2 wireless Cardbus adapter from Newegg.com to see if it will work properly in Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft. I have to now report that it does indeed work right out of the box in Ubuntu, complete with WPA2 wireless security.

PostgreSQL notes

You can use the PostgreSQL 8 Tools, such as pgdump, to dump data from a PostgreSQL 7.3 server! Of course, the other way (PG 7.3 tools to PG 8 server) doesn't work.

Zimbra Connector for Evolution

One of my co-workers just sent me a link to the just released Zimbra Connector for Evolution.

Myths and Truths about the Linux Kernel

I came across this web page a while back and it help solidify many of the real answers to many people's complaints about Linux and presents them in a fairly easy to understand manner. I had lost the link, but thanks to Digg, I've got it back!

OLS 2006 Keynote by Greg Kroah-Hartman

I really should start digging around the in Linux kernel myself. I'd think that I would find that very interesting to do.

Attempt #2 on installing Ubuntu Edgy on a 8800 GTS

Let's see if this works...

Step 1

Install the x86_64 version of Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy using the Alternate CD.

Done!

Step 2

The first boot after install will fail! Set the driver to use the "vesa" driver (per this thread in the Ubuntu forums):

Yahoo! Pipes

I was looking something up about RSS feeds on wikipedia when I stumbled on a little entry about Yahoo! Pipes.

Steve Jobs' Commencement address (2005)

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary." -- Steve Jobs, June 12, 2005

Nautilus Scripts for Subversion additions

At work, I've setup a Subversion server for the several developers to use while coding for our current and future projects. The other developers used Windows for their O.S., so they are able to use TortoiseSVN to check out, commit, and other functions on the Subversion repositories.
